A Quick Guide - Places to Visit in Xi'an

When thinking of cities to visit in China, Shanghai and Beijing are what spring to the fore of most people’s thoughts. That is evidently granted when you consider the size, history and global acclaim of both these cities. For me though, Xi’an is worth visiting just as much as these two renowned cities for numerous reasons. I am first to admit, when I arrived in Xi’an I was there to see the all famous and fascinating Terra Cotta Army Museum, and there is no doubting due to the historical elements of the site it is a must for the vast majority of travelers to see. Despite this, however, you would be naive to think this is the only thing worth seeing in and around the city. Alongside the museum there are a range of differing places that are worth visiting just as much that for many are probably unheard of.

To help you along your way compiled is a list of places to visit in and around Xi'an for any tourist or visitor that will provide a cultural, historical and diverse experience you will struggle to obtain anywhere else in China. So if you are looking to capture a varied experience around one of the most historically rich city's in China this should provide a useful starting point.

1)    Terra Cotta Army Museum

To anyone remotely interested in history this will top the list of things to see in Xi’an. Located just outside the city the museum is centered around 3 buildings that house the army sculptures, the army pits and the army weaponry of the first Emperor of China (Emperor Qin). Collectively the buildings help show off one of the most historical sites in Asia and is a must to go and see for all travelers and visitors of the city. When visiting here I would allow at least half a day on your travelling schedule to take in all aspects of what the museum has to offer.

2)    Dayan Pagoda Northern Square

The Dayan Pagoda Northern Square is a highly unique sight that is probably unknown to many outside of China. At night the square comes to life in the form of a fountain and light show performance that is unusually calming and tranquil. Throughout the night the entire square is additionally lit up in front of Dayan Tower with decorated gardens and statues giving a special ambiance to the place. When you add in that visiting the site is completely free it is definitely worth dedicating a night relaxing and taking in all that this unique location has to offer.

3)    Tang Paradise

One of the biggest cultural theme parks in China is definitely worth a visit. Allowing you to absorb and experience the Tang Dynasty the theme park offers an insight  through inscriptions, fountains, sculptures, shops, songs and market places from this memorable era in Chinese history. Staying in the evening to see the Tang Dynasty dance show and the intriguing 3D projected movie across the theme parks central lake is a must!

4)    Huaqing Hot Springs

Located outside of the city the hot springs at the base of Mount Li allow you to take in the long lasting history of Huaqing Palace   and hot springs amongst the scenic surrounding landscape. If the weather is fitting you can additionally take a hot spring bath in Gufei pool whilst taking in the different elements of this peaceful location. All in all if you are looking for a relaxing day on the outskirts of Xi’an I would definitely recommend coming here before venturing up Mount Li.

5)    Mount Li

Directly next to Huaqing hot springs Mount Li reaches heights of over 1300 metres and dependent on your energy levels you can either walk to the summit or take the cable cart to the top and back. If you go during the evening you can witness some fascinating sights with the surrounding areas lit up below. Alongside Huaqing hot springs this is the perfect location to get away from the hussle of the main city to witness one of the high points of Guangzhong Plain.
